About Climbing Grades
Grade conversions are approximate. Different systems were developed independently and don't always map 1:1. The same grade can feel different depending on rock type, style, and conditions. Use this as a rough guide, not gospel.
French — Used across Europe for sport climbing. Most universal system.
YDS — Yosemite Decimal System, standard in North America.
UIAA — Union Internationale des Associations d'Alpinisme. Common in Central Europe.
British — Technical grade used in the UK (separate from adjectival grade).
Ewbank — Used in Australia and New Zealand. Single number, no letters.
Saxon — Traditional system from Saxony, Germany. Used in the Elbe Sandstone area.
Font — Fontainebleau scale for bouldering, used across Europe.
V-Scale — Hueco scale for bouldering, standard in North America.
